Passion and sex, life and death - why Jacques Brel rocks

IN RETROSPECT it may seem obvious that John Waters would be seduced by the songs of Jacques Brel, which he sings in a show devoted to the spirit as much as the music of the man regarded as one of the great songwriters of the 20th century. The young Waters, living in south London in the early 1960s, would hop on a ferry across the Channel to discover the more romantic, more exotic and erotic offerings on the Continent. At home, Cliff Richard or Perry Como sang of sweetness and light or the delights of a cardigan, and the Beatles and Smokey Robinson trilled of love. But Brel, the Belgian-born giant of the French dramatic song form known as chanson, sang of soldiers, whores and drunkards, of grand passions cast on the rocks like crumpled ships. Advertisement: Story continues below Now that's living, as singers as disparate as Scott Walker, David Bowie, Rod McKuen, the Kingston Trio and Judy Collins knew all too well in their later English versions of Brel songs. In the port of Amsterdam, in the words of Brel, ''there's a sailor who dies/Full of beer, full of cries/In a drunken town fight'' - but, as Waters ruefully confesses, he most often travelled to the far less romantic port of Ostend in Belgium (''not exactly the most exciting town in the world'', he sighs). Luckily, a side trip to the south of France and an encounter with a busker singing Brel's Le Plat Pays, followed by a chance to hear Brel in a farewell concert in London, turned the then 17-year-old's head. ''It surprised me that I liked it but when I thought about Rosetta Stone Arabic it, it's not so strange for someone who is into rock'n'roll music as I was,'' Waters says. ''I believe that the kind of immediate passion and the basic themes of sex and life and death are very similar to rock'n'roll, although this is a uniquely European, Gallic form of song, really.'' Even as he explored the rock and soul of the late '60s, moved into acting and music theatre and migrated to Australia to appear in Hair on stage and later Rush on the ABC, Waters kept hold of Brel. He was probably the only cast member in the early '70s Sydney production of the English-language review Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris who knew the songs. Definitely the only one who knew them in French. Two decades later when the success of Glass Onion, his stage show based on John Lennon, became such a success he took it around the world, Waters came back to Brel. In its second incarnation, after a brief tour 12 years ago, Brel is intense, dramatic and unapologetically French. ''In singing the Brel songs, one of the reasons I sing them in French is because I don't think you can separate a song from its sound. And that means of course its language and the use of vowel and consonant and the percussive nature of the language that Brel uses,'' says Waters, whose French is fluent. ''When I sing the songs I don't consciously think, 'Now I'm going to do a spot-on impersonation of Jacques Brel', but I like to give them the same flavour that he gives them.'' There are few things that are inconsequential in a Brel song - he trafficked in strong emotions and extremes - and it doesn't matter if you know the language; you just understand. ''In some ways I like singing these songs to an English-speaking audience because they really listen to the passion and the musicality of the songs,'' Waters says.

US, S.Korea to wrap up war games amid N.Korea crisis

The US and South Korean navies were Wednesday set to wrap up war games meant as a muscular show of force to North Korea, as world powers remained sharply divided on how to deal with the nuclear-armed regime. Their biggest-ever joint exercise, which has seen jet fighters thunder through the sky above a US carrier battle group, began days after Pyongyang stunned the world with a deadly artillery strike on a South Korean island. The shelling of Yeonpyeong island, which killed two marines and two civilians, has infuriated South Koreans and sharply raised public support for a far tougher military response if the volatile North should attack again. Advertisement: Story continues below The 10 warships and 7,300 crew taking part in the drill were Wednesday carrying out "manoeuvres of fleet protection and logistic sustainment under various scenarios of enemy threat", said South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The North has warned that the four-day Yellow Sea exercises brought the Koreans closer to "the brink of war". In the South, Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young said there was "ample possibility" of another North Korean strike. The regime of Kim Jong-Il, which has staged two atomic bomb tests since 2006, ramped up tensions when it boasted Tuesday about a new nuclear facility that, experts warn, could be used to produce weapons-grade uranium. With the Koreas plunged into their worst crisis for years, diplomats at the United Nations and elsewhere struggled to find common ground on whether to punish Pyongyang or seek to engage it in new talks. China, the long-time patron of the communist regime, has blocked attempts for a UN Security Council condemnation of North Korea over its attack and its new nuclear activities which contravene UN resolutions, diplomats said. No talks were held Tuesday Rosetta Stone Korean and one diplomat said veto-wielding China "says it is unacceptable to 'condemn' or even 'express concern' over North Korea". "Council talks have come to a standstill. It is now very likely that the Security Council will do nothing about North Korea," the diplomat said. Beijing has instead proposed that the six parties to long-stalled North Korean denuclearisation talks -- the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan -- hold an emergency meeting on the crisis. Washington, Seoul and Tokyo have been cool to the proposal or rejected it. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters: "I think the Chinese have a duty and an obligation to greatly press upon the North Koreans that their belligerent behaviour has to come to an end. "And I think you'll see progress on multilateral discussions around this over the next few days." Diplomats are seeking to arrange a meeting between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers, though no date has been announced yet. Envoys from North Korea and Japan are now visiting Beijing, and China's top foreign policy official Dai Bingguo is expected to head to North Korea this week, according to reports. The frantic diplomacy is going on against the backdrop of a massive leak of US embassy cables by whistle-blower site WikiLeaks, which adds a new perspective on China's views about North Korea. China has long supplied the impoverished country with food, energy and diplomatic cover, in part because it fears a regime collapse that would bring a flood of refugees and erase a buffer state with the US-allied South. But the leaked US cables -- although they are second- and third-hand accounts of Chinese officials' views -- nonetheless suggest Beijing is growing more exasperated with its neighbour.

Label Their own, Electric Empire Music

You may remember him from such TV shows as Australian Idol (2008 season). Luke Dickens was the sheep shearer from Young who entered the TV talent show for a bit of a laugh, discovered he was pretty good and came second in the whole thing. Having since decided to make a proper go of this music lark, Dickens released an album of good-time blues-rock last year (Underdog) and has lately found a new audience as winner of the prestigious Star Maker contest at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January. ''I won't be changin' my style up none,'' he says, in typical no-nonsense fashion, ''but the music, we're certainly gonna transpose it slightly so that the city guys and the blues lovers and the country lovers are all gonna have something there for 'em.'' He's particularly serious about his country audience. Not only is he heading to Nashville in June to work with some sizeable names for his second album, due in July, he has already found a great collaborator closer to home. ''I just finished a writin' session yesterday with Bill Chambers and we're really excited about what we came out with,'' Dickens says. ''He was that happy with the song, he kind of mentioned to me that it's one of the greatest things he's been involved with. ''But who knows, mate? There could be 10 better ones on the way, too.'' ALPINE Genre Glacial electronic pop. From Melbourne. Label Ivy League.Coming gigs April 1, 7pm, Metro Theatre, 9550 3666, $28.70 (supporting Sparkadia and Operator Please). They started out under the name Swiss, changed their name to Alpine (to avoid confusion with ace Adelaide troupe the Swiss) and have named their debut EP ''Z252;168;168;rich'' (umlaut and all). It is, at first glance, an odd fixation for a bunch of friends who met each other either through school or university in Melbourne. ''Those names, they Rosetta Stone Software definitely kind of tie in with the feel of the sound we want from our music,'' explains Phoebe Baker, one of the six-piece's two chanteuses. ''Alpine seemed to fit in with that whole kind of - I don't know, you think of going skiing and being up in the Alps. It's so beautiful and fresh and simple.'' From the crisp, driving beats of the EP's lead track, Heartlove, to the atmospheric, dare we say chilled, vibe of Too Safe and Villages, Alpine achieve the desired effect. Also, to Baker's delight, her band have been likened to everyone from Mercury Prize winners the xx to pop ice queen Goldfrapp. In fact, the hardest thing for the band might be their having to evoke the album's wintry vibe in packed, hot Australian venues. ''We've got a whole bunch of cases of fans and fake snow,'' Baker jokes. ELECTRIC EMPIRE Genre Old-school soul/RB.From One lives in Sydney, two in Melbourne. ''The best of both worlds,'' Dennis Dowlut says with a laugh. Label Their own, Electric Empire Music.Coming gigs March 18, 8pm, Oxford Art Factory, Darlinghurst, 1300 438 849, $23. Riding high on the success of their electronic funk project Disco Montego, Dowlut and his younger brother, Darren, had a plan to infiltrate the US market in 2005. ''The Electric Empire band is something that Darren and I wanted to create when we were going to the States,'' Dowlut says. ''We were gonna take our material and then, instead of being an electronic outfit and producers, we were just gonna put together this incredible band with everyone with the ability to sing and play and do harmonies and write and produce.'' In the cruellest twist of fate, just before the brothers were to leave, Darren, at 26, died of cancer, having been diagnosed less than two months before. After taking a break and eventually reuniting with long-time friends and collaborators Aaron Mendoza and Jason Heerah, Dowlut put together the band he and Darren had dreamt of.

One of fashion's finest heads to the library

From fashion magazine editor to fashion company chief executive ... Robyn Holt. An Australian sense of humour has helped Robyn Holt succeed on the world stage of glossy magazines. Robyn Holt has never played a game of cricket but she has a lot to thank the game for. It was when she was making costumes for the 1984 Kennedy Miller miniseries Bodyline that she met the man who would be central to her business and personal life – Jim Holt, an actor who was playing the Yorkshire coalminer and fast bowler Harold Larwood in the show. The pair fell in love and decided that only one of them could work in movies because they didn't want to be apart. Advertisement: Story continues below That decision set her on a career path that has taken her around the world running glossy magazines including Vogue, Glamour and GQ. It also taught her to trust her instincts, especially the one that tells her she is happiest – and works best – when she has her family around her. The couple have a daughter, Hannah, 23, who is a teacher at Scots College in Sydney and who spent several years at boarding school while her parents lived overseas for Jim Holt's work. Born in Sydney and schooled at Meriden Church of England School and Sydney University, Holt began her career as health and beauty writer for Vogue magazine in Sydney in the '70s, in a job that sounds more glamorous than it actually is. Little did she know that her decision to give up making costumes for movies and return to Vogue in 1984 would start a career that would one day end up with her as chief executive not only of Vogue but, decades later, of one of Australia's most successful fashion empires – Collette Dinnigan. Holt worked with Dinnigan for a year until January 2009, overseeing the expansion of the Sydney-based designer's fashions into the mass Rosetta Stone Spanish (Spain) market via the Wild Hearts lingerie range at Target. Their split at the start of this year raised eyebrows in the fashion world as people had talked about the surprising match-up of a powerful magazine queen and a demanding fashion designer. However, Holt explains it this way: “I had accepted to be a director of Australian National Maritime Museum and also on the Northern Territory Tourism and, with the financial crisis all around us, I found my skills in big demand in areas looking at ways to consolidate brands, evaluating different sectors of business and what would be necessary to survive this crisis. “During my year at Collette Dinnigan, her lingerie line was a very successful licence and did very well. Another international licence was created. “The global crisis and retail contraction curtailed this strategy. It was so obvious to me that Collette should go back to basics and concentrate on the core business.” This isn't the first time Holt has changed direction in her job as a result of global financial upheavals. In 1990 she resigned as Vogue Living editor-in-chief and took over at Yves Saint Laurent Beaute, which was later bought by Sanofi. “We faced a huge hurdle of being a French luxury company in the '90s recession when no one wanted French products due to the nuclear testing in the Pacific and recession mentality,” Holt recalls. “In fact, I was given the role as managing director because my parent company at the time did not want to send a Frenchman to Australia.

BMW said it did not intend to deceive Google

In a recent notorious case, an insider revealed the marketing techniques of US company Traffic Power - an all-stops "always be closing" sales pitch designed to get whoever answered the phone to sign up for thousands of dollars of business. "Is it a priority for you to have higher placement on the search engines?" the salesperson was instructed to breathlessly ask. "Don't you want to maintain top of mind awareness?" And then they moved in for the kill: ". . . is money the only thing standing in the way of us doing business today?" But Mr Peczek says "black hat" operations are rare in Australia compared with Europe or the US. Google's guidelines as to what oversteps the boundaries are fairly clear, he says - though he disputes its advice not to trust a company that asks for an exchange of links. There is an ongoing debate about what crosses the line into "black hat". Experts this month deliberated over a consumer products site in the US that had received the optimisation touch. Phrases such as "fights bad breath" were made into "masked" links that looked like plain text to the naked eye. Opinion was divided as to whether this crossed the line. Even the biggest companies can fall foul of "black hat" work. In February, Google temporarily removed results for the German language websites of car maker BMW when it used so-called "doorway pages" - text-heavy pages liberally sprinkled with key words that attract the attention of Google's indexing system. BMW said it did not intend to deceive Google. Mr Petryshen says the BMW case was positive for the industry. "Things like this show that if you do cheat Rosetta Stone Language you're going to get caught," he says. "It can seem (to clients) there are a lot of cowboys out there operating by the seat of their pants but those companies are starting to fall by the wayside. "The best way to tell them apart is to talk to their customers. If they don't want you to, it's a good sign that something is fishy." Tim MacDonald - whose company Found Agency worked with Fast Impressions on optimising its site - warns that not all optimisation experts are truly experts. "Many website designdevelopment firms claim to do SEO but actually know very little about it," he says. "You wouldn't trust everything a car salesperson tells you, and you should use that same level of scrutiny with people building your website. "Your best bet is to look at their client list. If an SEO has a good, recognisable client base, and their clients actually rank, you can be fairly sure that SEO is kosher." Optimisation professionals claim the per-click cost of a natural listing is as low as 10-25 per cent of the cost of paid advertisements. After going through the process, Fast Impressions found itself consistently at or near No. 1 on Google searches for several keywords. Mr Parfitt doesn't deny the results - and paid about $3000 for his initial optimisation work. But he is still ambivalent about the value of third-party optimisation. "It's something you can do yourself more effectively," he says. "For the past year and a half we've basically done our own site optimisation. To be honest, you just need to have a relevant site. Have a good service, build a good site with lots of relevant pages, make sure the content is nice and rich - and somewhat repetitive when it comes to certain keywords - and that's kind of all you really need to do.

Greek was the language of Naples for seven centuries

From her terrace, we glimpsed eerie, sunken ruins sloshed by the sea and the two-humped outline of Capriacross the water. We felt the great age of our surroundings when Hazzard led us ona walk through the city centre. Spaccanapoli (its modern name isVia Benedetto Croce) is a long, straight street that cut throughancient Neapolis. Here a Greek agora and Roman basilicas lie underRenaissance churches; a tomb decorated by Donatello in sitsmodestly in San Michele Arcangelo; the 14th-century church of SantaChiara shows scars from its World War II bombing - it washalf-reconstructed when Hazzard first saw it - and yet themajolica-tiled cloisters are as bright as new; narrow lanes ofstalls sell traditional nativity figures and erotic souvenirs. We finished at another landmark: Caffe Scaturchio, once listedin an Australian guidebook as serving the best coffee in the world. When Hazzard told the owner he objected: "Too much. Best coffee inNaples." We travelled south another day to Pompeii and Herculaneum, which was the more impressive thanks to being smaller, betterpreserved and less overrun with tourists. Unwittingly we joined oneof the first crowds to enter the restored lupanaro, Pompeii'stown's brothel decorated with fresco-porn. Back in Naples, once we'd worked out opening times, we found thevibrant mosaics taken from those towns in the Museo ArcheologicoNazionale. In a hilltop park behind the city, the Museo diCapodimonte housed an exhausting collection of works by Titian,Botticelli, Raphael and Caravaggio. We revived in the streets nearour hotel, popping into shops selling exquisite cakes or handbags.Apart from the seeming lack of traffic rules, we never feltthreatened. (We left our camera in the hotel safe and hence have nophotographs of Naples.) Dinner with Hazzard was at her local restaurant, Rosetta Stone V3 Rosiello, on avine-covered terrace overlooking the sea. No tourists; just a fewlocals, house wine, shellfish and a piece of succulent, costly seabass. She spoke of the ancient, knowing look on the Neapolitan faces;of friends whose lives were defined by wartime trauma and stoicism;of how Italy had saved her from the misery of her UN job. Hermemories and knowledge wound through our journey like grapevines, linking this day with all the days before it. From the Mergellina wharf we caught an aliscafo, or hydrofoil,to Capri. The 35-minute trip ended at the busy port with news thata 24-hour train strike had stopped the funicular that wouldnormally carry us up the island's steep cliffs to the main town ofCapri. After sitting out the hubbub over sandwiches and Garibaldis(Campari and orange juice) at a dockside cafe, we rode up thebougainvillea-draped, white-walled slopes in an open taxi. With a story for every occasion, Hazzard told us of a time sheand Steegmuller had walked behind a father and his small son, whocommented on the lovely bougainvillea flowers. The man explainedthat the red petals were actually leaves and their tiny yellowcentre the flower. "Father," said the boy in Italian, "it is enoughthat they are beautiful." As well as showing simple wisdom, he madeperfect use of the difficult Italian subjunctive. The taxi dropped us near the central Piazza Umberto I, beyondwhich the narrow streets are for pedestrians only. Thecrisscrossing crowd of daytrippers here was oppressive. If Hazzardwas old Capri, new Capri was embodied in our sighting among thefashion boutiques of the Australian rugby league player AnthonyMinichiello and his shoe-designer girlfriend, Terry Biviano, in ahead-turning microdress.

It's scheduled to debut next month as part of an opera festival

This week, however, Seven was unable to claim the usual triumvirate of winning the prime time audience share, the news race and the tabloid current affairs race over its rival Nine. Nine's A Current Affair enjoyed a rare win over Today Tonight, thanks to Tracy Grimshaw's interview with the ''family'' of the teenage girl who confessed to a lie detector test on 2Day FM's Kyle Jackie O Show that she had been raped. Granted, the ''family'' turned out to be the girl's aunt and cousin, but the publicity surrounding the interview helped ACA to an average audience of 1.4 million, ahead of Today Tonight's 1.3 million. The rest of the night belonged to Channel Seven, whose overall win was thanks to the 1.9 million for Rafters and 1.5 million for Seven News (as compared to 1.3 million for Nine News). Ten had the second-most watched program of the night with Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation drawing 1.5 million, which was enough to put it into second place in the prime-time audience share. Seven finished with 31.5 per cent of the prime-time audience, ahead of Ten with 25.9 per cent, Nine with 23.8 per cent, the ABC with 15.3 per cent and SBS with 3.6 per cent. WITH TWITTER IN THE CHORUS IN THE tradition of Jerry Springer: The Opera, the Royal Opera House in London is producing a Twitter opera. The entire libretto will consist of Twitter messages, with the public helping to compose the work by contributing at the site twitterroyaloperahouse. It's scheduled to debut next month as part of an opera festival. The company has stressed the tweets don't have to make sense. Like this, from the end of Act One, Scene One: ''William is languishing in a tower, having been kidnapped by a group of birds who are anxious for revenge after he has killed one of their number … The Woman With No Name is off to her biochemistry laboratory Rosetta Stone German to make a potion to let people speak to the birds.'' BIG DAY FOR MICHAEL AND MARLENA JEFFERY ABOUT 500 people who share the belief that, to quote the law, marriage is ''the union of man and woman, to the exclusion of all others'' are expected to mark the inaugural National Marriage Day today. They are expected to converge on the Great Hall at Parliament House in Canberra for a National Marriage Day Breakfast, where it will be announced that the former governor-general Michael Jeffery and his wife, Marlena, are the inaugural Marriage Day ambassadors. The breakfast organiser and national vice-president of the Australian Family Association, Mary-Louise Fowler, said the group would present a petition to parliamentary representatives she hoped would attend the breakfast seeking to make the day official. Presumably she can count on at least one pollie turning up: her brother, Senator Bill Heffernan. WITH IRISH SHOCK JOCKS AUSTRALIA may be yet to master a political scandal worthy of aEuropean nation but when it comes to radio smut it seems we are milesahead - at least of the Irish. The BBC reports Ireland's broadcastingregulator has criticised a radio station for allowing ''offensivelanguage'' to be aired in a sketch about the band Boyzone. A listenercomplained about a broadcast in May on the Colm and Jim Jim Breakfast Show on RTE 2FM, in which actors posing as the singers Ronan Keating and Stephen Gatelydebated how to deal with the problem of an itchy groin after waxing.Airing at just before 9am, the segment also featured a discussion aboutwanting to attack a fellow band member, Mikey Graham, with asnooker cue.

Wallabies ready to chuck Chisholm in at the Sharpe end

EVEN though the Wallabies are toiling under a lengthy injurylist and a worrying form slump, they still believe an enforcedsecond-row change can bamboozle the Springboks in the Tri NationsTest in Perth on Saturday. Team officials were forced to delay the naming of the Testline-up until tomorrow, due to a catalogue of complaints thatyesterday led to two key players - second-rower Nathan Sharpe(shoulder) and inside-centre Berrick Barnes (concussion and neck) -withdrawing. Selectors were scheduled to announce a Test line-up withbracketed players yesterday, but opted against it due to concernsover the fitness of blindside breakaway Rocky Elsom (ankle) andfullback James O'Connor (corked calf). Advertisement: Story continues below The team will not be confirmed until after tomorrow's trainingsession, when Elsom and O'Connor will be assessed on theirreadiness for a Test the Wallabies must win, and win well, toremain in the Tri Nations race. Sharpe is expected to be replaced by either the Brumbies' Mark Chisholm or NSW's Dean Mumm, with Chisholm's experience possiblygiving him the edge. There are a number of alternatives for Barnesat inside-centre, but the best option is outside-centre AdamAshley-Cooper reverting to No. and Ryan Cross promoted to thestarting XV at No 13. While Wallabies coach Robbie Deans last night said theunavailability of Sharpe and Barnes was a loss, he added: ''We'vegot blokes who have been working with us for a while, so itshouldn't be that significant.'' The hope is that a new second-row combination may even affectthe world's premier lock, Victor Rosetta Stone Greek Matfield, as he would not be asfamiliar with Mumm or Chisholm as he is with Sharpe. ''Nathan has been an integral part of the lineout for a longtime, but all the other blokes are well versed and have abackground in calling lineouts,'' Deans said. ''It might be anadvantage in that Victor is a great reader of body language and heanalyses lineouts. He'll have less to work off.'' The back-line formation will depend on whether O'Connor canprove his fitness. O'Connor is an option at No., where he played with the Western Force this season but, though it would allow the Wallabies to continue fielding play makers at both five-eighth andinside-centre, it would be a dangerous move considering thedev astating power of the Springboks midfield. This is a time to play safe and use two solid defensive centresin Ashley-Cooper and Cross. If Ashley-Cooper starts at inside-centre, it will continue abizarre Test season in which he has played with aplomb on the wing, fullback and outside-centre. He also played the second half of the Sydney Bledisloe Cup loss at inside-centre in place of Barnes. ''There are not too many who can specialise in those fourd ifferent roles,'' Deans said of Ashley-Cooper. ''He can. If that'sthe way we opt to go, I have no qualms about it because he hasalready shown he is up for that.'' If O'Connor is unavailable, Drew Mitchell could move from wingto fullback. But if O'Connor stays, Mitchell and fellow winger Lachie Turner are under serious threat of losing their spot to Peter Hynes. The other anticipated change is Ben Alexander startingat tight-head prop for Al Baxter. Deans said morale among the players was increasing, but thatthey had been affected by losing three Tri Nations Tests in arow. ''They've got up pretty well and got back into the work. Buthaving said that, the mood is probably different than if thepenalty [goal] had missed [on Saturday],'' Deans said.

Westpac holds fire on rate rise

AFTER weeks of talking about the need to pass on rising funding costs to borrowers, Westpac's Gail Kelly was suddenly quiet when it came to the repricing of mortgages inside her own bank. While Commonwealth Bank's super-sized increase has paved the way for others to follow, the blasting the nation's biggest bank has so far received suggests few will be game to match their bigger rival with the full increase. Westpac, the pioneer of the super-sized mortgage rate increase, used the cover of its full-year profit result to duck the issue. Instead the bank's executives and board were focused on going through the detail of the underlying $5.8 billion cash profit, Mrs Kelly said. Advertisement: Story continues below It's more likely they were enjoying letting their arch-rival CBA sweat a little, much as Westpac was left on the hook when it pushed through a 45 basis points mortgage increase in December last year. ''Interest rate decisions are also very important and also things we never take lightly, and in coming to our position we also take into account a range of factors, including the effects of all our stakeholders and our competitive position,'' Mrs Kelly told analysts. ''No decision has been taken as I stand here today, and our interest rates remain under review.'' Her language suggested Westpac and its St George offshoot won't be going the full 45 basis points, with Mrs Kelly Rosetta Stone Japanese acknowledging her bank had learnt lessons from last year's clash with Canberra. Still, the banks argue a structural shift has been taking place around the way they do business, with average funding costs rising. Westpac's net interest margin revealed as much, falling 11 basis points over the year, although the pace of the fall started to slow during the second half. Given Westpac has only a modest exposure to business lending compared to rivals, it has less levers to pull when it comes to margins. However, with a large and low-risk mortgage book, Westpac's profit growth is skewed to the medium-term, with the bank expected to benefit when wholesale funding and deposit costs begin to stabilise. Even as debate raged around mortgages, Mrs Kelly indicated it remained a good business to be in and said the bank was again looking to switch on its well-oiled home loan franchise to grow its market share. Along with Westpac's run-up in cash earnings, the bank continued the reporting season trend of the big banks of surprising with payouts to shareholders, with a final dividend of 74 a share.

No all interactive music programs are equal in terms of quality. The Internet has made it easy for people to find products that normally would not be available to them. If you lived in a sparsely populated town, finding a person to teach you how to play the acoustic guitar could be difficult. In case you are not aware, today you would be paying at least $15-20 per half hour lesson. You would also face the possibility that lessons would be at a time in which the teacher had a single open time slot on his/her schedule. You are then made a bogus promise that you would be taught more material; if only you would kindly fork out $89.95 to purchase a DVD on guitar playing. At that price, would you actually be taught the acoustic guitar? You know, there is a difference between acoustic, classical, folk, and bass guitar. Instead, you are urged to consider this type of offer for what it really is; a scam. You need to run, not walk away from programs that promise you the moon. Instead, take your time and research interactive guitar lessons programs that have a reputable track record in the industry. Study the music sites that provide legit testimonials from students who have mastered the technique of guitar playing.

Business Writing Software - 7 Reasons For a Better Email Etiquette!

When holding business-related functions and Rosetta Stone Language events (such as a product launch or an industry lecture), your invitation letters matter. While it's impossible to correctly predict how many recipients will actually show up, an enticing invitation should help the number of positive responses considerably.Since this is a business affair, you invitation needs to reflect a certain level of professionalism while managing to excite your recipients' imagination. How do you do it?1. Make it formalEmail is a great medium for sending out invitations but nothing says you're serious more than a printed material. It adds minimal cost to the process, all while lending your invite a considerable amount of importance. When presented with two written matters, printed materials just beg to be attended to more urgently than a mass email.2. Personal touchThe more personal touches you can include in your invitation, the better your chances of success. A simple "Dear Mr. Robert Altman," for instance creates much more of an impact than a "Dear reader."3. Clean it upDon't ever send out invitations with any factual, vocabulary or grammar errors. Whether it's getting the venue wrong or writing incomplete sentences, they both lead to the same result - not being taken seriously. Always proofread your copy for factual correctness and run it through a grammar software to ensure clear writing.4. Have a clear agendaThe last thing anyone wants is to attend a function whose purpose is unclear. In your invitation, state what the affair is about in no uncertain terms, with a brief word on what they can both expect and stand Language Learning Software to gain from it.Everyday, I read business email done so informally, it makes me cringe. How do people expect me to take them seriously when they can't even be bothered to write their own emails in a proper way?5. Proper capitalizationWriting out entire sentences in small letters may be acceptable in instant messaging applications, but they're downright irritating on emails. At the least, capitalizing the proper letters lets me know you have basic writing capabilities. At best, I would not have to sit through acronyms written in small letters, making me look it up in the dictionary, thinking it's an actual word. If you're not sure which letters need to be capitalized, put it through a simple writing software and have it correct your mistakes.Don't even get me started on ALL CAPS...6. PunctuationPunctuations let me know when you're pausing, slowing down or changing tone. Without it, your copy reads like a never-ending alphabet soup, except it's got full words floating around. Help me out and give me a little rhythm while I'm reading your messages.7. Incomplete messagesJust because you can understand what you've written doesn't mean I'll pick up on it too. Put yourself in my shoes - if you have the same information that I do, will you get the point? Will you understand the message without any previous Rosetta Stone Arabic knowledge?Good Writing MattersEmails may be easier and less rigid than business reports and academic papers. That doesn't make them any less important to write. Give them the attention they deserve.
